scary monsters: what
the critics are saying
With shaking hands I just poured a second cup of coffee after another sleepless night that valium didn't cure.
"Narcotic Pain"
was absolutely gut-wrenching to read. "Dark Road"
filled me with remorse and longing for the times in my life I was blithely unaware of misery.
I try to get by with distractions but your poetry made me stop and face myself this morning.
Beautifully written introspection and compelling observations on life.
I miss you—
Julie Bogers
The
raw edge of your expression reminds me of Claude Monet painting his
dying wife and Vincent van Gogh painting his wheat field. (Note to
readers: Julie is my sister. See the family resemblance?)
...your so-called "poem" ["angel"]...
Deanna Day
I love you too, Deanna. By the way, how
many more boyfriends have you discarded since last time we chatted? Did
you meet your quota last year? Getting any use out of that electronic stud
finder I gave you?
I am delighted to inform you that your poem "falling
behind" has been awarded our prestigious Editor's Choice Award because it
displays a unique perspective and original creativity—judged to be the qualities
most found in exceptional poetry.

Thank you Howard, but I was actually hoping for
money. Come to think of it, I guess you were, too. Sorry to
disappoint you.
Can I go now?
Michelle Reinertson
Oh, um—sure, sweetie. You sure you
wouldn't like Daddy to read you "narcotic pain" just one more time before bed?
Your poems are so intriguing... so full
of depth, hidden meaning, love and sorrow.
Vidya Champatsingh-Ali
So are you, Vids, so are you...
Imagery like you use [in "Introspectus V"] is forceful and harkens back to a more classical
time when a quatrain of poetry compressed within its meter pages of hidden
meaning...I don't usually care for contemporary poetry. To me, it often
seems wordy, littered with incongruities, effortless, and affecting a quasi
cerebral mentality sans substance. Your poem had substance.
Philip Adix
Damn, Philip, you sound like you know what the
hell you're talking about.
Your poetry is absolutely phenomenal...not that
I expected anything less, but you certainly have a gift. There is
so much emotion to your writing, both poetry and prose.
Eva Diabolica
You always were a kind, giving, and honest
person Eva—is that your real name? Anyway I do hope that emotion wasn't
too much for you...please don't put a hex on me, love, I'll be good.
BRAVO, Richard!!!
Your "Introspectus V" is, absolutely, the best poem I have seen on these
boards...deep and meaningful, expressive work. Thanks!
Chester Beck
You're a sweet guy, Chester.
...very moving poetry. The depth, the pain and sadness, makes me believe that
you have suffered at sometime...
Connie Gerencser
Not me, Connie, I thrive on being treated like
freshly squeezed dog turds on a newly ironed tablecloth.
I could feel the "narcotic pain." Very well written. "neither" rocked me till I
was dizzy. I know about your "angel" but it was not me, I would have
touched your brow.
Kathleen Nydam
Actually I think you did, Kathleen—or maybe it
was somewhere behind my brow...
